Everything you need to know about HMS HearMeSafe — anonymity, safety, professionals, self-tests, and how the community works. 35+ questions answered.

Getting Started

Never. HearMeSafe requires only an email address (for login and account recovery) and a pseudonym of your choosing. Your pseudonym is the only identity anyone on the platform ever sees. You can also post fully anonymously — in which case even your pseudonym is hidden.

Yes, completely free. Joining the community, reading posts, commenting, sharing your story, joining groups, and taking self-assessment tests are all free. Some professionals charge consultation fees — many offer free first sessions. The core platform features will always remain free.

Pick any name you like — real, invented, a metaphor, or a feeling. Common examples: NightOwl254, QuietStorm, OliveGrove, HarbourView. Avoid choosing a pseudonym that is the same as your username on other platforms, as HearMeSafe is designed to be a separate private space.

Registered members can read community posts. When you post anonymously, only "Anonymous" is shown — not your pseudonym. Your email address is never visible to anyone on the platform, including professionals and moderators reading your posts.

Yes. From Settings, you can permanently delete your account at any time. All your posts, comments, messages, reactions, and personal data are permanently removed within 24 hours. This action cannot be undone.

HearMeSafe is accessible worldwide. We have members from over 180 countries. Our platform is designed to work across different legal and cultural contexts. Our professional directory includes verified practitioners from dozens of countries across every continent.

Yes. HearMeSafe is fully responsive and works on all modern mobile browsers. You can access the full platform from any smartphone — no app download required. We recommend saving the site to your home screen for easy access.

The platform currently operates primarily in English. We are actively working on expanding to other languages including French, Spanish, Arabic, Swahili, and Portuguese. Many of our professionals are multilingual and can offer consultations in other languages.

Privacy & Safety

Never. We do not sell your data, share it with advertisers, or allow third-party tracking of any kind. We have no advertising business model. Our revenue comes exclusively from optional professional subscription plans — not from your personal information.

Your email is stored securely with industry-standard encryption and is never displayed to other users, professionals, or the public. It is used only for account login, password recovery, and optional email notifications which you control completely in Settings.

Use the one-click Report button on any post, comment, or private message. Every report is reviewed by a human moderator, typically within a few hours. Accounts found in violation of our Community Guidelines receive consequences ranging from content removal to permanent account banning, depending on severity.

We comply with legally binding court orders as required by applicable law. We store minimal personal data by design — we cannot provide data we do not hold. We notify users of legal requests wherever legally permitted to do so. Your employer has no access to your HearMeSafe account or activity.

Yes. All private messages are encrypted in transit using TLS and encrypted at rest in our database. No third party — including HearMeSafe staff — has routine access to your private message content. Either party can delete a conversation at any time.

Posts that describe ongoing self-harm intent in specific detail are reviewed by our trained moderation team. We do not remove all discussion of self-harm — peer support and shared experience is valuable. We do intervene when immediate safety is at risk, providing crisis resources and, when necessary, reaching out to appropriate support services.

Every professional on HearMeSafe goes through a multi-step verification process: credential document submission, professional licence number verification against national regulatory databases, and identity verification. Verified status is shown with a blue verification badge. No one can present themselves as a professional on HearMeSafe without passing this process.

Community & Content

Every week we publish a single reflective question for the entire community. It is completely optional — a gentle invitation to share, not an obligation. Past prompts have included: "What is one thing you carry quietly?" and "What would you say to yourself five years ago?"

Yes. You can post, comment, react, and follow activity across all 12 topic channels without restriction. There is no limit to your participation across the community.

Content that specifically targets, demeans, or endangers individuals. Commercial spam or promotional posts. Medical diagnoses or treatment advice presented as fact by non-professionals. Content designed to facilitate self-harm. Attempts to identify anonymous users. See our full Community Guidelines for the complete list.

Yes, absolutely. There is no time limit on sharing your experience. Some of our most valuable and widely-read posts are about events that happened years or decades ago. Healing and reflection do not have an expiry date — and your story may be exactly what someone in an earlier stage of the same journey needs to read.

Yes. Any member can apply to create a private group with a specific focus — for example, survivors of a particular event, people in a specific location, or people navigating a specific experience. Groups require moderator approval and ongoing adherence to Community Guidelines.

When posting as your pseudonym, other members see your pseudonym and your avatar colour — they recognise you as a consistent member of the community over time. When posting fully anonymously, only "Anonymous" is shown — no pseudonym, no colour, no consistent identity. Full anonymity is better for your most sensitive disclosures.

Use the Search function to find posts by keyword or topic. Browse individual channels that match your situation. The Explore page shows trending posts and new arrivals. You can also browse posts by channel from the sidebar navigation.

Currently, HearMeSafe does not have a traditional "follow" feature — this is a deliberate design choice to prevent popularity dynamics that can harm honest sharing. You can, however, follow discussions via comment threads and receive notifications when people respond to your posts.

Working with Professionals

A free introductory session is a no-obligation call of typically 20–30 minutes where you can assess whether a professional is a good fit for your needs. No payment information is required. If you choose to continue, the professional will discuss their fee structure with you directly.

Consultations take place via secure video or voice calls, or through written messaging within the HearMeSafe platform. All consultation content remains confidential within the professional relationship. Professionals are bound by the ethics codes of their respective licensing bodies.

Clinical and counselling psychologists, psychiatrists, licensed marriage and family therapists, registered social workers, bereavement and grief specialists, addiction recovery counsellors, and certified life coaches. All are verified in their respective fields. Specialities span over 40 focus areas.

Yes. Many of our professionals offer services internationally, particularly via video consultation. When browsing the professional directory, you can filter by language, speciality, and consultation method. Some professionals specialise specifically in cross-cultural and expat mental health.

This depends on your insurance provider and your jurisdiction. We recommend checking with your insurer. Many of our professionals can provide receipts and documentation suitable for insurance reimbursement claims. This is best discussed directly with your chosen professional.

Self-Assessment Tools

No. Our tools are adapted from validated clinical screening instruments and are for self-awareness, reflection, and educational purposes only. They cannot diagnose any condition. If you are concerned about your mental health, please speak with a qualified professional. Your results can be a helpful starting point for that conversation.

Our Anxiety Assessment is based on the GAD-7. The Burnout Inventory uses the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) framework. The Attachment Style tool draws from Bowlby's attachment theory and validated adult attachment measures. The Resilience Scale is based on the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS). The Grief Assessment uses ICG criteria.

Test results are processed locally in your browser session by default. They are not stored on our servers or linked to your account unless you specifically choose to save them to your personal mood journal. If you save results, only you can see them.

Yes, as many times as you like. Mental health is not static — many members find it useful to take the same assessment every few weeks to track changes in their experience over time.

Crisis Support

Please contact emergency services in your country immediately (e.g. 999 in the UK, 911 in the USA, 999 in Kenya). HearMeSafe is not a crisis service and cannot guarantee immediate response. Our Crisis page provides hotline numbers for over 40 countries.

Yes. Our Crisis page lists emergency hotlines, text lines, and online chat services for over 40 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania, and the Americas. Visit /crisis.php for the full directory, always accessible from the top of every page.

Professionals set their own availability and response times. For urgent support, please use the crisis resources on our Crisis page rather than waiting for a professional response. In a genuine emergency, always contact local emergency services first.
